“Num8ers” By Rachel Woods Reading

If you had a special power, which is that you can see other people’s death date, for your whole life, what would you do? If you ask me, I would keep it to myself and only tell people that I loved and people who want to know. I would also tell my secret to the people that I trust. This question depends on many things that you have to think about, such as who you trust, telling the truth and being able to work together as a team. But what would you do: tell other people your secret or keep it to yourself? That’s exactly what a girl named Jem is trying to understand in the book “Num8ers” by Rachel Woods. Jem is blessed with this amazing power, where one day London, she saw that everybody was going to die on the same day. She and her only friend, Spider, run away from the mess and the police, where spider learns about Jem’s special powers. The author, Rachel Woods mix many ideas and themes onto the book and shows how they’re connected to each other.
In the story, the three ideas that should be group together are running away, leadership, and working together. As they run away from the police, they need a plan to keep them safe. In the story, it states “’what should we do now?’. ‘I don’t know’ ‘We should go to your grandma’s first and pack,’”. The author is showing that Jem and Spider are working together packing and ready to leave the city. As they travel they need a leader to lead to their destination. But instead of only one person lead, they both lead each other as a group. The author is showing to us that working together as a group with a confident leader can help you secede in life
Another group of ideas that is important are homeless and money issues. In the middle of the story, Jem and Spider became homeless because they have nowhere to live and they need to out run the police so they need to change their sleeping spots. They sleep on the forest ground and sometimes find a shelter to live. As a result of being homeless, they have no money and that they cannot get what they want. To support this, in the story it states “’Jem, don’t you want the money? All I want is a twin-size bed in a hotel, walking on the pier and eating fish and chips.’”. This proves that spider is very desperate for money. Other example is that it states “What Jem, I want my part of my money. I just on a couple of hundreds,” This prove how Spider is determined to get the money. This connects to the real world because many people are just like Jem and Spider who have money issues which leads them of being homeless. Many are abandoned and many are struggling with their new life on the streets.
The third group of ideas is working together, trust, and truth. In the story, as Jem and Spider run away from the police, Spider learns Jem’s secrets. Jem really want to tell the truth because Spider is her friend and that she trusts him. In the book it states “I know you won’t believe this but I just want you to know that I trust you. I can see when other people die”. This shows that Jem is taking a risk and telling Spider about her biggest secrets. The author wants to tell us that when you are working together, you need to trust other people. Sometimes you need to tell the truth. What I’m really trying to say is that you need to trust yourself and at the same time trust other people.
This shows that the author uses ideas and themes throughout the story showing us the traits of the characters. The author fist shows us how running away, working together, and leadership connects and how it relates to the characters. Then, it shows being homeless and poor has an effect on Jem and Spider. Lastly, it shows how to trust and telling the truth while working together. I think the author wants to show this because life can be challenging and sometimes you need to complete the challenge with other people. All of this can help you answer what would you do if you are Jem? This connects to our world and while people around us. We all have to work together and you need someone to lead you and guide you to the right place. Sometimes when you work with other people, you need to trust them and sometime you need to tell them the truth. All of these things can help you and other in the way of life.
