If one day, you open up your computer and saw a blue banner that says "Facebook". You open it and you see pictures of yourself and your friends, posts that you made about dinner, and the person that is in a relationship with you. But then, you realize that all your post are made 15 years from now. You find out who you are married to and figure out that guy (or girl) is not what you want. You really want to get rid of him and that is what Emma in "The Future of Us" is trying to do. The book is written by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler is about a high school girl who find that she can see the future using her computer. She told her best friend Josh and they begin to figure out what they can do to have a better life in the future. Things on Facebook changed as they change who they are and what they want. They both want something that they hope to get.
In the beginning, both characters, Emma and Josh, really want to find the perfect person that they can have in the future. Emma and Josh both find out who they are married in the future. Josh who is lucky is married to Sydney Templeton. Sydney is the girl where every boy wish to go out with her. Emma on the other hand, don't like her future husband, Jordon Jones Jr. She then figure out that she can change herself to change the future. It states "Married to Jordon Jones. Jr...'unfortunately' she says 'those ripples didn't develop into a typhoon." What she meant is that the "ripples"which is the things she do right now didn't change the future that much (didn't change her husband). It also states "they have phone books from all over the country...I clutch the phone against my shoulder, wipe my sweaty hands on my shorts, and clear my throat". It proves that Emma really want to change her future husband even is she have to spend time finding him. The authors are showing us that if you really want to do something such as never meeting your future husband, then do it.
Throughout the story, Emma and Josh focus on their own life but sometimes care for each other. Their friendship isn't bad but it's not good. It states "before last November, Josh and I wouldn't have been standing awkwardly in the doorway...sometimes, from a distance, I barely recognize him". This proves that something is going on that affected their friendship that when they figure out the Facebook thing, they are a little not loving and joyful. It also states "Emma shakes her head. 'I'm sorry if-' 'Idon't care,' I say, looking at her computer. 'let's just forget it' 'I'm sure it hurt, so I want you to know-' 'It didn't hurt,' I say" This shows that they are fighting even if it's a tiny problem. The authors show that you should think what other people want.
In conclusion, as Emma and Josh using Facebook as a guide, they begin to realize what they want and what they want from each other. The authors show the readers that the "wanting" of something (friendship) is very strong. Sometimes in life, you can get everything that you want but you also have to think about what others want. I felt that it's very strong and that it happens everyday in the world. Everyday, I see how people want something (from money to food to love) but they also have to give it to other people . The authors show this in Emma and Josh. What I'm trying to say is that having to much things to want can show who you really are.
Sounds like an interesting book. Very abstract. I don't think that it would be something I would read of my own volition, but maybe watch as a movie. I admire your perseverance in reading such abstract sci-fi.
